Project 1: ARCHITECTURE REVISITED: PENANG DISCOVERY CENTER

Nestled within an important landmark of Penang- a historical heritage site of Penang, where it was one known as ‘Venice of the East’, this project aims to revitalize and revive the Butterworth frontage and seafront with neighboring site both acting as a gateway to the city. The site connects an important landmark, Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal and Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal by water transportation.

Located by the seaside at Pantai Bersih, next to R & R Bagan Ajam, being the only rest stop at Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR). This project envisages to reactivate and revive the waterfront of Butterworth, whilst creating a new gateway and landmark with futuristic approach of discovering Penang’s gem.

This Penang Discovery Center is designed to accommodate at least 300 people with a height of maximum 3-stories building. The site is located on the South-West Coast of Seberang Perai Utara with an area of 2.22 acres (9011.58 sqm). It is located by the seaside of Pantai Bersih, which offers stupendous view of the opposite Penang Island. The site is also located next to the R&R Bagan Ajam, being the only rest stop at Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR). Total gross floor area of this center is not more than 3000m2.

Penang Discovery Center is a gateway to Penang’s art and creativity that is rich in cultural and heritage values. It is a series of spaces where work of arts is showcased. It presents a comprehensive collection devoted to modern and contemporary art in Penang. It is an expression of ideas and artwork of identity, history, conservation, urbanization, while addressing the cultural and heritage essences on urban living in the modern cityscape. As a hub of talented artists, it may accommodates to the flexible workspace / office (co-works space) of local designers and entrepreneurs.
