Project 3 : 'The New Minden Co-op Kindy Care'

Design Statement

This kindergarten is designed for a capacity of 60 children in which it is a two-storey structure with a built-up area of not more than 450 square metres (4036.5 square foot). It is located on USM main campus, Gelugor, Penang in which an existing koperasi tadika minden kindergarten was previously built on this site. This kindergarten is suitable for children between 4 to 6 years old to stimulate their sensitivity and allow their greatest possible variety of large muscle movement both indoor and outdoor.

Design concept

Nowadays a majority of children in pour country are growing up in urban areas and they are exposed to gadgets. They rarely have opportunities to get outside to interact with peers and green environment. This kindergarten is designed to create an intimate and friendly learning environment for children through expansion of the hierarchy of space. With consideration of hierarchy and spatial typologies, it gives an interesting layout and interface between inside and outside, creating an intimate layer between the courtyard and kindergarten itself so as to explore more children’s daily activities.

The entire kindergarten is conceived as a’ village’. The volume is decomposed into 5 isolated ‘cottages’ according to the programs. More spaces were created for the children to explore and fully develop their nature by taking advantage of the building’s height and the large number of steps on the interior space.
